Mind Maps

Mood board ideas

My overall idea for the Magazine feature would be urban/trendy/grunge fashion. The feature would include a UK fashion article discussing fashion across Europe and its inspirations from other generation fashions such as the 90s and how a lot of young teens/adults are conforming and accepting the grunge and gothic style.

I would like to take pictures in simple rural locations such as Parks, woods, streets, alleyways, and houses to keep it as simple and realistic as possible. I have looked through multiple pictures from a Grunge inspired blog and they all share in common the simple, urban backdrops which is either in full focus as well as the model or the background would be blurred and the model in full sharp focus.

I would like audience to focus on the fashion and the person’s style. So the wardrobe, hair and make up would play an important role.  The poses would be very relaxed, some in motion (moving. Walking), sitting down etc. This would help emphasis how ‘cool’ and chilled the style is and the activities in which these type of people take part in.

Grunge clothing is now mainstream and items and accessories can be found in popular high streets such as Topshop, Urban Outfitters and American Apparel as well as thrift stores in popular locations such as Brick lane, Shoreditch high street and Camden.

Magazines where this could feature:
-Grazia
- A Fashion Blog
- The We Love page on the Topshop website – focusing on current trends and popular items in Topshop

Show evaluation

Multi Camera – TST Evaluation

In James lessons we had been taught about Multi-Camera and Single Camera production and how it works. For one lesson he gave us a chance to have some hands on experience practicing how to produce something in a Multi-Camera set. This helped us to grasp the idea and the differences between this and Single Camera production which we are used to. Multi-Camera production is working on a set with multiple cameras filming at the same time. This technique would usually be used for live TV shows or Soaps for example Eastenders which is based on a designed set.

We were then assigned as a group to produce a Multi-camera Magazine show which would include the inserts we had created previously. We were then assigned roles by our producer Pierre. I was assigned the role of one of the main camera operators. My role was to operate the camera on the left end of the set. I had to produce wide shots and close-ups of whatever object the producers were talking about, medium shots of whatever guest came on sitting on the single moving chair, medium shots of when there was just one presenter sitting on the sofa so that there wasn’t a lot of wasted space in the shot and when our guest demonstrates her makeup strategy on Tyler.

All camera operators had to wear a headset that was connected to the booth where we could communicate with the Producers, Director and Visual Mixers. This was very useful; it allowed the director to “direct” us on whatever shots he wanted to see. This also made us feel very professional and important and this gave us a feel of how a real set would be directed. We also worked alongside the Floor Manager (Danny) whose job was to make sure that everything on the set ran smoothly and setting up camera equipment and dealing with wires/cables.

Mahan our director produced our camera script which was used as guidance to what shots we were meant to follow and when they were meant to happen. Unfortunately the camera script was only presented to us on the day of the live show which made our roles very stressful and unorganized. In the end the camera script wasn’t even used because the whole production was unorganized and instead the director instructed us with directions on and offset through our headsets.

I think I played my role very well and took every advice and direction from my director assertively and efficiently. At first I thought the role of a camera operator would be very difficult because without the camera operators there is no how, but to my surprise it was quite easy and pretty simple. My previous camera skills made it quite clear that I was appointed the role of a camera operator correctly.

I also produced a short story which was played after the opening credits at the start of the show. This insert was inspired by the film ‘Shaun of the Dead’. The main concept of it was to enhance the Halloween theme and involve the Presenters so that it could smoothly run into the start of the show. The clip illustrated a zombie chase with one of our Presenters Doran being chased by a mob of zombies. Then when he is caught by the zombies he comically stops and answers his phone; on the other line it is Mahan the producers calling to ask where Doran is and to get to the set immediately so that they can start the show. The clip was filmed in an underground old abandoned subway across the road from college which was really dark and grim which was a great location to film the whole clip.

Doran invited his friend who is a horror makeup artist to do the makeup of all the people participating as zombies. The make was at a professional standard and it looked so realistic and scary. Everyone looked like serious zombies! We got down to the subway and filmed all the footage within an hour. The camera operators were I and Sammy, the rest as zombies. Within the same day I and Mahan edited the footage so that it could be ready for the live show which was the next day.

I generally think that things could have run smoother for us if we all collectively worked as a group, also taking direction from the appropriate roles and working fast and efficiently. However the show in general turned out okay despite a few difficulties, but we got it done and that was the important thing.

If I could do things better I would have made sure that I was in every day ‘on time’. Also I would have filmed the Horror Insert a lot sooner instead of it being filmed carelessly the day before.

I have learned a lot from this experience about the Media industry and myself as a person. This was a challenging but useful experience.

Insert Evaluation

Insert Evaluation

In class we were assigned to produce 2 minute inserts within a group of 3 to 4 people. My group consisted of Me, Aminah, Doran and Tashayna. I had come up the idea of basing the Insert on fashion because no one had chosen to cover that topic. I was really excited to focus on the topic because I love fashion and my aspiring career is to be either an Art/Fashion Director. Working within Fashion work placements and internships has made me more fashion aware.

In the first lesson we drew up a brainstorm of our ideas and what would be popular topics to talk about. We did this on an A3 sheet of paper and by the end of the lesson we had a page full of ideas. We then highlighted the best subjects to cover during the insert. We took inspiration from Gok  Wans show ‘How to look good naked’, where he sometimes goes out on the high street to gather up people’s opinions. The chosen title for our insert was ‘Fashion Voxpops’. Voxpops means to go out and interview/gather up information from people to gather opinions about a certain topic.

As it was my idea and I had the lead role in producing the clip. From the first lesson we had got so much done, we had already planned the ideas, decided what we wanted to see, created a survey to verify that Fashion is something college students would like to see and decided that the following week we would go out to Carnaby street and ask people within college grounds set questions on fashion in the UK.

Aminah took the role of the presenter, Tashayna did the pre production work along with setting up the microphone equipment, and Doran took the role of recording his voice over and assisting me with filming and editing. We had filmed most of the footage in 2 hours and the rest outside of lesson time. We successfully filmed everything very quickly and efficiently and this gave us more than enough time to complete paper work and edit the footage.

The insert consisted of information about fashion in the Uk, Fashion Idols; where we spoke about Rihanna having a huge influence on UK fashion and how she is releasing her own fashion line in River Island in the UK, clips to show how people in college dress and the different kinds of people from all backgrounds. This also addressed that City of Westminster is a multi-cultural college with diverse and individual fashion shown from numerous people at this campus.

Unfortunately the insert ended up being longer than it was supposed to. In total it added up to 2:55 instead of 2.00 which the brief instructed us to do. At last minute I tried to cut down the footage but it was almost impossible because everything was important and relevant. So in the end we didn’t cut down the footage which will probably have an effect on the group’s grade.

However during the process of producing and editing the insert we collectively worked equally in the group and completed and performed our roles to a great standard. I was able to work and get along with all members of my groups and we didn’t face any problems personal or work related.

If I could do it all again I would have looked and understood the requirements of the brief better and make sure that I abided to whatever was instructed. Apart from this fault I think as a group we produced a great piece of work and worked well as a group.

Light Photography

Equipment: Tripod, Canon DSLR Camera & Torch (light source)

The process of Light Photography:

-Step one: Place camera on tripod
-Step two: Then place the tripod in front of a blank wall where you will begin illustrating your image.
-Step three: Set the camera to TV mode with a ISO of 100
-Step four: Set the exposure to however long you want to capture the image. The higher the exposure the more light will be captured.
-Step five: Turn the lights off
-Step six: Stand in front of the camera and draw your image, at the end make sure you turn off the light from the torch so nothing else gets drawn.

Blurred Movement
How this was achieved: capturing a picture by not focusing on a specific object, so that every moving object in the frame is blurred.

Frozen Movement: Capturing a moving object while its sharp and defined and the background remains blurred. This singles out the moving object (car).

Shutter Zoom: Focusing on one object and then twisting the zoom whilst capturing the picture which will result in the desired effect below

The camera was set to the TV mode which stands for Time Variant. The shutter speed was set to 1/30.

Music Video Workbook

Unit 29: Music Video Production Assessment Book Task 1 (a): write a critical evaluation of the purpose of music videos, with examples.

Frank Ocean – Novacane: Frank Ocean is known best for his Rnb tracks with his unique appeal. What I loved about this video is that it is so simple but it explains so much. I love how straight forward the video is because usually when a songs content is talking about drugs, sex etc, it sometimes displayed as something else in the video to keep the audience thinking what the true meaning of the video actually is. The song to some people would be very explicit and awkward but this definitely does attract and target the teen and younger adult audience because of the drug behaviour that can sometimes occur in certain people’s lives. Throughout most of the video Frank Ocean sits at the foot of his bed in an empty room hallucinating while he envisions animals, geisha girls and pretty women. This helps to explain what the drug ‘Novacane’ has done to his mind and body. This is successfully represented with translucent figures of women and smoke. He complains that he can't feel his face whilst he rubs his hands over himself as he tries to snap back to reality. The purpose of a music video is to invoke a reaction and give the viewers something to remember in the future. This video definitely sets its self different from other music videos that I have seen because of its drug related behaviour and weirdness. Iggy Azalea – Beat down: Iggy Azalea is a new female rap artist originally from Australia. She is known well for her individuality and how she sets herself apart from other female rap artists in the United States. The song ‘Beat Down’ is a rap/electro/dupstep track where she collaborated with music engineers Steve Aoki & Angger Dimas well known for the great dubstep instrumentals. The video is definitely what you would expect when listening to the song beforehand. It includes strobing lights, colours, a great variety of fast camera shots and syncopated shots that correspond well with the music. The main location in this music video is of a boxing in the middle of a forest which successfully compliments the track title ‘Beat Down’. Iggy proceeds to do exactly that in the video; busting moves on a glass stage, whipping her hair etc. The choreography shows exactly what someone would usually do when they listen to dubstep/electro music. Labrinth – Earthquake: Labrinth is a young Uk artist with very impressive and versatile vocals which can be used for singing and both rapping. The song ‘Earthquake’ illustrates about having fun, causing mayhem, being loud and crazy creating an earthquake. The video excellently displays this with great graphic animations of loud speakers, high tech futuristic equipment in the background him jumping around the space and giving a great performance for the viewers. This would be a perfect example of a great music video because it invokes the audience and gives us a great sound track to dance and have fun to whilst watching the video or listening to just the track itself. The video in my eyes would be described as ‘Loud’, this being because the track is something you would want to blast in your room to get the full effect of creating an earthquake, the video definitely has a lot of graphics and interesting objects transforming into other things which keep the audience very entertained and not tempted to changing the channel and after the song it definitely does stay in your mind and given you a great experience in just the space of 4 minutes. This would have to be one of my favourite videos so far. Outkast – Heya: This video is a very memorable song that was produced during 2003. I would have to say that this video successfully draws the audience in by its craziness and intriguing narrative. I think what also makes a video successful is an interesting narrative that compliments the song title; something that doesn’t confuse the audience and something that is somewhat expected but excellently produced. Outkast is one of the most innovative and successful groups in hip-hop, who have always produced great music and videos. They have a big reputation and have always delivered the best of the best in the music industry. So this video meets the standards that they have always met and I have no criticism for this video because it was that much perfect. The song takes influence from old school funk and rock music. The music video was produced featuring André 3000 as various different versions of himself, playing on comparisons to The Beatles by mimicking their 1964 performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. When André 3000 instructs to "shake it like a Polaroid picture" in the track, there are shots of some of the girls taking pictures and shaking them like instructed, this is the most memorable part of the video and up to now people will always sing that line of the song when it has something to do with taking a picture from a Polaroid camera. Task 1 (b): critically evaluate the styles and conventions of music videos, with examples.

The purpose of a music video is for promotion, income and to invoke a reaction from the audience. Music videos help to keep the artist or band in the public eye after the release of their album leaving them in the public eye for as long as possible. This means the artist/band will continue to rack up sales of their album for months after its release. This helps recoup the production cost of recording the music originally. Music videos can also be used for film sound tracks. For example; Sean Paul ft Keisha Cole – Give it up to me which supports the film Step up.
In the video you can see shots of the dance film and also the music artists alongside the actors and actresses from the film. This is another purpose for music videos because when people think about the film they think about their song as well. As well as promoting their song Music Artists sometimes promote their clothing line in the video to make it recognizable to the audience. This sometimes encourages consumers to buy their products because of the influence of the artist and how it can be worn. In music videos other featuring artists from either their song or a record label can appear in the video to sometimes remind the audience of their successful record label or to make the video look more successful and put them on a hierarchy. The post popular conventions of a music video would be performance, dance, lipsync, choreography, narrative and impressionist. Performance: Performance music videos normally show a live performance from a concert or a live concert set up. This can sometimes include a narrative around the performance. Coverdrive – Twilight would be a perfect example for this. This shows the band singing around a band set up in a grassy area in Barbados. A Narrative of them hanging out and chilling in their hometown works around the performance.
Narrative: A narrative is a music video that tells a story throughout the video and describes a sequence of non-fictional or fictional events, normally shown as a short story or film. Narrative music videos are normally very popular as it engages the audience in the story and the story can often relate to the audiences experiences for example, a breakup, death in the family ect. A large range of artists now include narratives into their music videos as its different to usual music videos and the story that the artists has chosen to project, may be a special topic for them or something they feel strongly for. Interpretive; Interpretive means something that looks like something else, but has a different meaning. Interpretive music videos normally want the audience to make their own interpretation of what they think the music video is about. Here is an example :
This video is sung by Rihanna and is called Russian Roulette. This video is a prime example of an interpretive music video as the video doesn’t have a clear meaning giving the audience time to inter prate it in whatever way they want. The video is about a woman who appears to of been placed inside a special what seems to be a Russian prison, where the guards don’t seem to be too nice to her. This means that the audience has to interpret their own meaning on the video as it isn’t made clear where she is or why she is there.

Camera Shots: This music video is called No Regrets and is sung by Dappy. This video uses a number of camera angles and shots in order to make this video interesting. In this video we see quite a lot of panning shots as well as low angle shots (to make the character seem big and powerful), high angle shots (to make the character seem small and weak), close up shots to show the emotion of the characters lyrics and long shots so that the audience can see the characters clearly. Also the video uses a fade transition between shots. This is to add a bit of emotion and feeling to the video. I feel that these angles and shots work really well with the theme and lyrics of the song as the song is about having no regrets and I feel that the camera shots really pursue this theme as the transitions are smooth and rental.

Task 2: Plan with creativity and flair a music video using found and original footage.

Title of Music Track/ Artist: Frank Ocean – Swim Good Music

Video Concept: What I aimed for in this video was to produce it with a clear and successful narrative that complimented the song and its meaning. The song ‘Swim Good’ can be interpreted in different ways depending on the person. I repeatedly listened to the song to try and give myself an understanding of what I thought the song was about. This was extremely tricky because the song doesn’t have a video so I had to rely on myself and some online reviews of what other people interpreted the song to be. I came to a conclusion that the video was about losing someone and carrying his broken heart with him. In class we were instructed to produce a moodboard. With this I created a collage of what I thought the song was about and what I would want to be included in the video. I finally decided to make the video about a couple that are constantly battling to be with each other. The video has a clear narrative from start to finish.

The video was recorded in one location which was a house; so this included shots from the hallway, bedroom, kitchen, garden, outside a window, the front door and the road of the house. The main character is my friend who plays the girlfriend who is constantly arguing and making up with her boyfriend. The shots below illustrate the struggle that they have been through (Shot list).

Media Regulation : Rupert Murdoch

Dear Jon Cruddas, I am writing to you to address the situation about Rupert Murdochs demands to own the entire BSKYB organisation. I believe that he is not the right person to own this company and furthermore he owns too many companies in the country, so him owning the entiere BSKYB would just be greedy instead of designating the roll to someone else who deserves it. He is also not capable of running the buisnesses that he owns now so why would he a reliable source to own  BSKYB? Fair enough he plays a big role in society but he is not living up to his reputation.

Also with the attempted allegations of being apart of the phone hacking scandal should be one of the biggest doubts as to why he should not run BSKYB.

He breached the privacy laws of the Data Protection act by hacking into peoples phones such as politicians, celebrities, the British royal family and the Deceased Milley Dowler. This imoral act led to the closure of the News of the world. I personally think we can not trust Rupert Murdoch for this acts this and last year and that if he was to own the whole of the BskyB that it will be very narrow minded, and he will own let people see what he wants to see instead of uncovering the full story. I believe that he will use this company to his full advantage which will soon lead the media into a lot of trouble in the near future. He would have the advantage of performing acts like he did with the phone scandal and be able to get away with it and easily breach laws because he owns the whole company.

I'm sorry but this should not be allowed and his postion of being the full owner of BskyB should not even be considered for the medias sake.

Frankie Boyle

I would like to defend Frankie Boyle for his mistaken disgusting behaviour on his show on Channel 4. Frankie Boyle brought up Jordans son Harvey who has a severe disability and lightly mocked this which to some was seen as disrespect instead of a joke. Frankie Boyle did not intend to insult Harvey but to give the audience something to laugh about. A celebrity like Frankie Boyle who has regular comedy shows displayed on TV would not choose now of all times to intentionally disrespect someone elses disabled son unless it was something personal. Someone in his position who has a lot of fans and people who idolize him would not do this to be little him or to embaress Harvey or Jordan. Channel 4 encourage equality for all races, religions and disabilities and strongly aim to maintain this by making everyone equal. So jokes that might involve race, disability or religion is not intended to discriminate them but for them to feel included instead of discluded.

Dear The BBC,

I am writing to you in regards to the disrespectful comments made by David Starkey discussing the riots on BBC's News night. David Starkey falsely outlined as to why the the London Riots had begun. In his interview he stereotypes an entire race and strongly argues that the black race has influenced other races to behave barbarically. Not only was it stereotypical , It was also racist and prejudice.
I took huge offence because I am part of the black african race and feel as if we have been victimised by people of high athority, and have been labelled as a group of people who share the same characteristics other than different individuals with different circumstances like the entire human race.

I also couldn't understand how someone who plays a giant role in London would be so narrow minded and old fashioned. Someone who has this position in society should be open minded, bias and an inspirational speaker.
He has no right to display the upmost disrespective on Tv and for the most thing it gives the public a bad look on the BBC and question your morals and beliefs as a company

Self Evaluation
 1. I think that half way through the process we managed our time very well because we had missed out on the first week because all group members were ill and we knew that we had a lot to catch up on so we buckled down and worked hard and productively. 2.
One example of us manage our time effectively was filming all the ident in one lesson which gave us a lot of time to edit our footage. One way we could have improved out time management was making sure that all members of the group are in the lesson and on time so that we can start our work immediately instead of waiting and relying on others. 3. I would rate my other crew members a 4/5
 4. I gave the above score because we all worked collectively as a group and all put in a great amount of effort to create our finished product. We all got along very well and didn't experience any bust ups or disagreements. We all put forward our ideas comfortably and were also assigned roles that suited our own personal skills
5/6.I think i fulfilled my role well , I was able to create 3 creative ident mind maps to brainstorm our different ideas. I also always had a positive attitude and always suggesting my ideas even if they weren't great.

Cut out animation evaluation

Cut out animation Evaluation

Cut-out animation is one of the oldest forms of animation. Cut-out animation involves moving cut-out shapes in small steps and taking a picture at each stage, this is a lot less work than having to draw every single frame of the animation.

Cutout animation is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: cutout shapes arranged on a flat surface, and manually moved and repositioned to simulate animation. Cutouts can be colored paper, white paper with drawings on it, even photographs, and can be completely flat or can sometimes be 3D object
The cut-out animation technique is great to use when you want to create an animation that looks fluid without spending hours adjusting individual keyframes and producing artwork. This technique is used to produce a range of popular animated television shows including South Park, Blues Clues and Angela Anaconda.

One pioneer of cut-out animation is Terry Gilliam who had a unique visual style of sudden and dramatic movements and errors of scale. He uses surrealist landscapes populated by large buildings, Victorian objects such as prams, statues, machinery and cut out people from Sears Roebuck catalogues for the characters. He successfully obtains new and humorous meanings the tradition of surrealist collage assemblies.

The process of cut out animation from : http://animation.about.com/od/faqs/f/What-Is-Cutout-Animation.htm

First the scene is created using cutout objects, laid out flat against the background image

The scene then has to be adjusted to the next frame in the sequence, much like stop-motion animation / claymation - making it notably different from traditional animation. Rather than working between keyframes, cutout animation has to be produced from beginning to end in sequential order, with each change between frames involving minute adjustments to the assembled pieces before the next image in the sequence is captured on video. Sometimes parts of animated cutout characters need to be changed out, if the character changes the angle of their position or changes facial expressions. Facial expressions can be drawn on different heads, or the different facial features can be cutouts themselves, allowing them to be moved or swapped out with different features.

This method of animation is what creates the signature somewhat jerky style, even when animators strive to create completely smooth motion. The cutout pieces can often seem to jitter and bounce in place.
Cut-out animation, of course, does have limitations. Because the cut-outs are flat, they must work across or up and down the screen in a flat plane. Despite the difficulty of cut out animation it is still a relatively simple animation style that is quite popular among novices because it requires little drawing or application of complex animation principles

Clay animation

Clay animation or claymation is one of many forms of stop motion animation. Each animated piece, either character or background, is "deformable" made of a malleable substance, usually Plasticine clayIn clay animation, each object is sculpted in clay or a similarly pliable material such as Plasticine. Using Plactercine is a very flexible method of animation because it is very easy to create characters exactly how you want it and to move objects such as arms and legs correctly to look life like. Clay animation is 3D animation so you are able to move the objects freely in most dimensions, able to lift & also turn over objects which you can't do in cut out animation because it is 2 dimension.  As in other forms of object animation, the object is arranged on the set (background), a film frame is exposed, and the object or character is then moved slightly by hand. Another frame is taken, and the object is moved slightly again. This cycle is repeated until the animator has achieved the desired amount of film. To achieve the best results, a consistent shooting environment is needed to maintain the illusion ofcontinuity. This means paying special attention to maintaining consistent lighting and object placement and working in a calm environment.
Great care must be taken to ensure that the object is not altered by accident

Clay animation has been around for decades and has been popular particularly for children’s television programs and movie-length features
One of the most famous practitioners of the clay animation style was Will Vinton, who began experimenting with the style in the late 1960s and onwards. Some of his most famous productions include ‘Will Vinton’s A Claymation Christmas Celebration’ (1987), ‘Return to Oz’, and the television series ‘The PJs’. Will Vinton has trade-marked the term ‘claymation’ as applying specifically to his work and style of clay animation, however the popularity of the technique in recent years has lead to it becoming a generally accepted descriptive term.

Other examples of other films/tv shows with clay animation is , 'Pingu' , 'Wallace & Gromit' & 'Chicken Run'.

The disadvantages of clay animation is that it is very time consuming , it takes a long process because each frame is created individually. Each second usually varies from 20-24 frames per second.

A Zoetrope is a device for giving an illusion of motion, consisting of a slitteddrum that, when whirled, shows a succession of images placed opposite the slits within the drum as one moving image.  The Zoetrope is based on the same principle as the phenakistiscope, but is cylindrical in shape. This enabled several people at the same time to view the moving pictures - an advance over the single spectator of the earlier toy. The English mathematicianW.G. Horner was the first to describe the zoetrope, calling it the 'daedaleum'.

The zoetrope, or Wheel of Life, was another early optical toy. The cycles have to be very simple, and are made of only 12-14 images.

Eadward Muybridge

Eadward Muybridge was a British photographer who is well know for his pioneering work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras to capture motion in stop-action photographs, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip used in cinematography. Eadweard developed a fast camera shutter and used other state of the art techniques of his day to make the first photographs that show sequences of movement. In 1879 the Zoopraxiscope was developed, which projected a series of images in successive phases of movement obtained through the use of multiple cameras. Eadweard Muybridge's most famous motion studies, a row of cameras snapped a dozen or more photographs of a passing horse; the public was astonished to see proof that a trotting horse can simultaneously have all four hooves off the ground. For this experiment Muybridge devised a fast camera shutter and used a new, more sensitive photographic process, both of which dramatically reduced exposure time and produced crisp images of moving objects.
